Instructor's notes for linking kinship editor diagrams to web page
-
0) Load your home page using the server and book mark it.
your URL is
http://stirling.kent.ac.uk/Anthropologists/[loginname]
-
1) Put a COPY of the kinship editor file in a folder called Kinship in the www folder (if necessary.
create the Kinship folder)
-
2) Change the name of the kinship editor file in the Kinship folder so it has no spaces in it.
It creates extra complexity to keep the spaces.
-
3) open the index.html file in the www folder using goLive (drag from www to GoLive icon in the dock).
-
4) Add a link to the kinship editor file. e.g. Type text 'My Kinship Editor File", select over it, use
the browse icon on the inspector to find the kinship editor file, and hit return. (Some people will not
have inspector windows open, so if the inspector window is not open, it must be
opened, and you should not close it. Apparently windows people close all windows all the time)
-
5) Go to your home page on safari and do reload. Ensure you are not using the file://URL to
do so, but going through stirling.
-
6) Click the new link.
-
7) It would be a bit better to have the data interpreted into the form you did it in.
You can create a jpeg file by using the render options under the File menu in Kinship
Editor, but it is better if users can check through the information for each person, 'run' the genealogy
through time etc.
-
8) Enter the applet. A program that interprets the data from the form you see from the browser using the
existing link into a diagram like you made in the Kinship Editor
-
9) Go to the course page (http://lucy,kent.ac.uk/Courses/SE300 ... book mark this too, if you
haven't already).
-
10) Down the page a bit is "Kinhship Editor Applet Template". Click this.
-
11) Scroll down a bit, and you will see a genalogy.... What we are going to do is add this page
to your web site, and change it to show your kinship diagram.
-
12) Do "Save As" into your www/Kinship folder. Note that it will want to save it as a "Web Archive" on
the save dialog box. You MUST change this to Page Source. You should save under the name
kindiagram.html. (long names bother GoLive)
-
13) Now you should edit this file in GoLive. Go to www/Kinship and drag the file to Golive.
-
14) You should scroll down in golive and see a big green area. You should click on this. The inspector
will now show the size and other information that tells it to load the right applet from stirling. You
should not change this information.
-
15) There are tabs in the Inspector now. The second one is Params. You should select this.
-
16) There are 4 lines. URL1, Label1, URL2, Label2. These connect the applet to your data files for
kinship and terminology.
-
17) If you click on URL1 line, there are two fields at the bottom of the inspector. You should change
myfamily.kin to whatever you called your kinship editor file, and hit Return.
-
18) Now you should make a link to the new file from your index.html page (which should still be open in
GoLive).
-
19) Type text "My Kinship Diagram", select over it, and browse in Inspector to the new .html file. Hit
return.
-
20) Save, and then back to safari. Do a reload to update the page. Should have new link. Click on it.
-
21) WIth luck, your kinship diagram will now show. If not, it is usually (almost certainly) because you
mistyped the name or never copied it to the same folder as the new .html file in the first place.
-
22) Now done. You can change or erase the text in the .html file to suit you, as long as you don't
erase the large green box!!!
-
Note we will be doing this in future. You can do your terminology file the same way (e.g. a separate
page), or add it to URL2, where it will be available from a little menu in the diagram (upper left of
diagram).
