HTML

An acronym for HyperText Markup Language, HTML is the language used to tag various parts of a Web document so browsing software will know how to display that document's links, text, graphics and attached media.

HTTP

The abbreviation for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, HTTP is used to link and transfer hypertext documents.

Hypertext

This term describes the system that allows documents to be cross- linked in such a way that the reader can explore related documents by clicking on a highlighted word or symbol.

URL

This is the abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator, the addressing system used in the World Wide Web and other Internet resources.

2) How to read a bibliography

Three types of bibliographic reference

i) Books or Monographs by a single author

Zeitlyn, D. 1994. Sua in Somié. Mambila Traditional Religion (Collectanea Instituti Anthropos 41). Sankt Augustin: Academia Verlag.

Note Author name, Date, Book title (Series Title) Place of Publication and Publisher.

Most ordinary Library catalogues allow all of these to be searched.

ii) Journal articles

Zeitlyn, D. 1993. Spiders in and out of Court or 'the long legs of the law.' Styles of spider divination in their sociological contexts. Africa 63(2), 219-240.

Note Author name, Date, Article title, Journal Title, Volume, issue and page numbers.

Most ordinary Library catalogues allow only the Journal Title to be searched.

iii) Chapters in edited books

Zeitlyn, D. 1995. Divination as Dialogue: the negotiation of meaning with random responses. In Social Intelligence and Interaction (ed.) E.N. Goody. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press pp. 189-205.

Note Author Name, Date, Chapter Title, Book title (Series Title). Editor Name, Place of Publication and Publisher and page numbers.

Most ordinary Library catalogues allow Editor Name and Book Title to be searched for NOT the author and chapter headings.

iv) Online sources.

Zeitlyn, D 2003 Sample of One. Online http://www.mambila.info/Diko_web/index.html Date of access: 18 Nov 2003

Note date of access so others can view the same page as =you via an archiving service

3) How to search a bibliographic database

Zeitlyn & (Fischer or Lyon)

Access to souces - NB Each source is partial - UKC catalogue does not list books not held in UKC Library and so on...

1) Books

UKC Library Catalogue

Other Library catalogues

eg

SOAS (via telnet). Note Netscape tells the computer to launch another program

COPAC a merge of many different UK library catalogues

2) Journals

Anthropological Index Online - hosted at UKC for the RAI, indexing the contents of journals of the Museum of Mankind Library in London

International Bibliography of Social Science indexing the contents of journals of the LSE Library

ISI Citation Indexes - US bias but very good NB Must search Social Science and Arts/Humanities Citation Indices separately since anthropology is split between them

Note for both of these last two need you login as "ukcant" pw= piano8forte (from on campus only - for access off campus you must ask the computer service for an individual id/pw.
